This page allows you to choose yarn based on its category/weight, which is determined by  The Craft Jarn Council.

You can find these categories listed on the labels of most yarns, along with the recommended needle size. However, this recommendation is not set in stone; you can choose to use a different needle size if the pattern calls for it or if you prefer a different thickness.
