The Island and the Forest: A Knitted Correspondence
Find inspiration in nature, the changing seasons and the quiet beauty of the Swedish landscape.
In The Island and the Forest: A Knitted Correspondence, Swedish knitwear designers Erika Åberg and Lotta H. Löthgren exchange letters and knitting patterns. Erika writes from the island of Gotland, off Sweden’s east coast, while Lotta finds inspiration in the forests of southeastern Sweden. Through their correspondence, they explore how landscapes, weather and everyday moments shape their creativity.
The four elements — earth, water, fire and air — guide the reader through the book. In their letters, Erika and Lotta share personal observations and reflections on creativity, everyday life and our connection to the natural world.
The book features 12 timeless and practical knitting patterns, translating the atmosphere of the natural world into stitches, textures and garments. More than a collection of patterns, it is an invitation to slow down, observe your surroundings and find inspiration in the world around you.
